Australian company Offshore Energy is taking the wraps off plans for an up to 250-turbine offshore wind farm around 25km of Gippsland, Victoria.
The company will present the details of a feasibility plan to government officials this week, according to widespread reports in local media.
The 2GW Star of the South project will cost around A$8bn. Studies to determine next steps are expected to take around three years.
Victoria’s government has plans to meet 40% of energy needs from renewables by 2025.
The state’s energy minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the project will drive down electricity prices and vowed to support the developer “wherever we can”.
“Offshore wind would add to Victoria’s system capacity and security as Australia transitions to a more diverse energy mix,” she said.
