Irish people generally have a positive view of renewable energy technologies but are reluctant to have projects developed close to where they live, according to a survey by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).
The results of the survey, which will be published in the July 2017 issue of the journal Energy Policy, found that the ‘trade off’ people make between economic and environmental policy objectives drives their opinions and tendencies to oppose project developments.
“This highlights that policy makers need to understand how people make trade offs between policy objectives and how these trade offs relate to their opinions of different technologies,” ESRI said.
ESRI said that it is important to know what drives people’s opinions in opposing particular projects to try and avoid delays in development.
