The EU should raise its 2030 renewable energy target to at least 35% and re-introduce binding national targets, according to a leaked European Parliament report.
The report forms the basis of the European Parliament’s position on the new Renewable Energy Directive, which will determine the future of renewable energy deployment in the EU, said green group CAN Europe.
The report argues that the European Council’s endorsement of a 27% target came before the EU signed the Paris agreement on climate change and was based on outdated technology cost estimates, CAN Europe said.
The green group described 35% as a “step in the right direction” but called on the EU to set a renewables goal of at least 45% by 2030.
Such a target would “strengthen investor confidence”, said CAN Europe director Wendel Trio.
