Michigan considers green Switch

Consumers Energy is planning to set up a program to help Michigan businesses become 100% supplied by renewable electricity by investing in clean power projects.

The utility has applied to the Michigan Public Service Commission to approve the plan.

The first company to take up the plan, if approved, would be the Switch Pyramid data center in Grand Rapids.

The proposed program offers a blueprint for Switch and other businesses that make renewable energy commitments, Consumers Energy said.

Businesses would help fund new renewable energy sources as part of the plan.

Consumers Energy senior vice president for energy resources Dan Malone said: “This program, another element of our clean and lean focus, demonstrates how we can help large Michigan employers like Switch to act on their commitments to our state’s economic and environmental future.”

Consumers Energy currently provides 10% of its customers electricity use from renewable sources.

Michigan’s new energy law states that 15% of energy will come from renewable sources by 2021.
