Unilever’s manufacturing sites in the UK are supplied with 100% renewable energy, following a deal with Eneco to buy electricity from a 23-turbine wind farm in Lochluichart in the Scottish Highlands.
Some 87% of the project’s output will be sourced by Unilever, with the remaining electricity sold to local communities.
The new deal builds on an existing agreement with Eneco in the Netherlands to source electricity from a wind farm in the North Sea to help power Unilever’s offices and factories.
Unilever said it is also using biomethane to power five sites in the UK and Ireland.
Unilever sustainable business and communications director Yvette Edwards said: “This latest step in securing an in-country, sustainable supply of wind-generated energy is an important milestone in helping us meet our bold ambition of becoming carbon positive by 2030.”
