California senators passed legislation this week that accelerates and expands the Golden State’s current 50% by 2030 clean energy goals.
Approved by a 25-13 vote, the bill mandates a 100% by 2045 renewable energy target. The measure would also speed up the transition to 50% by 2026.
If enacted into law, California will have “the most ambitious target in the world to expand clean energy”, said senate leader Kevin de Leon.
“Now more than ever, it is critical that we double down on climate leadership,” said de Leon. “Regardless of what Washington does, California will show the way forward.”
He added: “We are sending a clear message to the rest of the world that no president, no matter how desperately they try to ignore reality, can halt our progress.”
The proposed legislation will now be considered by the lower house, the state Assembly.
