Northern Ireland’s Applied Renewables Research has scooped an £80,000 contract from the European Marine Energy Centre to supply a microgrid system.
The Islandmagee company will design and deliver a simulated grid solution to facilitate the testing of small scale wave and tidal devices at EMEC’s test sites in Orkney.
The simulated grid will allow a device to behave as if it were grid-connected.
The simulation will provide a stable voltage and frequency reference, simulating the impedance of a typical grid connection and absorbing power from the device under test.
It will also provide power to the power take-off and auxiliary systems as required.
