Siemens rocks AC/DC offshore

German energy company EnBW is set to build a service base at Emden airport for its consented offshore wind farms in the German North Sea.

The planned 450 square-metre facility includes offices, a workshop and a warehouse.

Start of construction is slated for next spring.

Starting in 2019, some 40 staff will be based in Emden for operations and maintenance (O&M) of the 495MW Hohe See and 112MW Albatros offshore wind farms in the German North Sea.

Albatros and Hohe See combined will comprise 87 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 turbines that will be fully commissioned in 2019.

A further 60 people will be needed in 2025 when EnBW’s 900MW He Dreiht wind farm is expected to go live.

“We are happy to expand and to deepen our local engagement with the new O&M facility,” said EnBW executive Ralf Neulinger.

In early 2017, EnBW Offshore Service started a three-year O&M contract covering the substation at Ocean Breeze Energy’s 400MW Bard Offshore 1 wind farm in the German North Sea.
