Offshore wind capacity in Europe must reach 230GW by 2045 to meet the goals agreed under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, according to a new report by Ecofys.
The report, which was commissioned by TenneT and Energinet.dk, estimates that 180GW of the total needs be deployed in the North Sea and 50GW in the Baltic and Irish Seas and the Atlantic.
Ecofys said the capacity would ensure a fully sustainable power supply for members of the North Seas Energy Cooperation group – the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, UK, France, Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg and Ireland.
The figures are based on a drop of 50% in total energy demand by 2045 (relative to 2010), full decarbonisation of electricity generation and a 45% electrification level, the authors said.
