London-listed Windar Photonics is to supply eight WindEye lidars for a new €2.3m initiative launched by the Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator programme in the UK.

The Danish company’s lidars will be installed on offshore turbines as part of trials designed to demonstrate the effective implementation of control strategies.

The project, which is backed by EnBW, Eon, Innogy, Statoil and Vattenfall, will investigate strategies that aim to improve energy generation across an entire wind farm, rather than individual turbines.

The trials will take place in 2018 with the results expected during 2019.

Windar Photonics chief executive Jørgen Korsgaard Jensen said: “We are confident the project will focus industry attention on the multiple benefits of our WindEye systems, from increasing wind energy yield, reducing turbine fatigue, lowering operational and maintenance costs and ultimately reducing the levelised cost of energy for energy producers.”

Carbon Trust manager James Sinfield said: “The project has the potential to have a significant impact on cost reduction with a win-win on improving annual energy production and at the same time reducing operational and maintenance costs.”
