Battery storage outfit Younicos will provide a 1MW battery system for Statoil’s 30MW Hywind floating offshore wind farm off the coast of Scotland.
The storage solution project, named Batwind, will be operational from the second quarter of 2018 and will consist of two three-metre modular battery containers that will be added to the project’s onshore substation in Peterhead.
“Batwind has the potential to add value by mitigating periods without wind…making wind a more reliable energy producer year around,” said Hywind development head Sebastian Bringsværd.
Statoil said the battery will be equipped with software to automatically calculate when to hold back energy and when to send it to the grid based on demand.
“Battery energy storage systems have existed in the market for several years and are rapidly developing. However, there is limited knowledge of how to make a battery act based on dynamic information, in order to maximise value of renewable energy,” Bringsværd added.
