Siemens Gamesa is to start construction later this month of a 30 megawatt-hour energy storage system in Hamburg, Germany.
The storage system will be located at the Trimet SE aluminum smelter site in Hamburg-Altenwerder and will feature some 1000 tonnes of rock fill.
Excess renewable energy is converted into heat and stored in the rock fill. A steam turbine then converts the heat back into electricity when required.
The system is slated to go online in spring 2019.
