More than 50 multinational companies together with organisations including WindEurope and Solar Power Europe have called on the EU to set a renewable energy target for 2030 of at least 35%, instead of the current 27% proposal.
The call came in a letter to EU energy ministers ahead of the 18–19 December Energy Council meeting, which will discuss the target as part of the 2020 Renewable Energy Directive proposals.
The letter also called for the directive to help create an environment for corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) to flourish by lifting regulatory barriers.
“In the last two months alone, more than 1GW of capacity was contracted, with corporate buyers capitalising on ever more competitive renewable energy technologies,” the letter said.
“Corporate renewable PPAs therefore contribute to achieving national renewable energy ambitions, bringing forward billions of euros of investment, unlocking innovation and new business models,” it added.
Other signatories to the letter include Acciona, Amazon, Ikea, Microsoft, Philips, Vestas, Enercon, Iberdrola, Enel, Vattenfall, Siemens Gamesa, GE, RE100 and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
The European Parliament backed a change to a 35% renewables target at the end of last month.
