The Dutch Sustainable Energy Association (NVDE) is calling on the government to speed up implementation of parts of the Renewable Energy Directive III (RED 3).
In the infringement package on 12 February, the Netherlands received a reasoned opinion because it does not yet comply with EU rules for accelerating permitting procedures for renewable energy projects.
The European Commission argued that the Netherlands has not provided sufficiently clear and precise information on how the Directive is transposed into national law, according to the NVDE.
The Netherlands now has two months to respond and take the necessary measures.
“This underlines the urgency for the Netherlands to work on the implementation of RED III, especially in the field of faster permit procedures and the designation of acceleration areas for renewable energy,” stated the NVDE.
The Netherlands must designate areas that can be used more quickly for renewable energy and associated infrastructure.
Municipalities, provinces and RES regions had until 1 November 2024 to nominate suitable areas.
The NVDE has called on the government to give priority to this and to enter into discussions with the sector to ensure that the implementation is a “success not only on paper, but also in practice”.
