Statoil, Shell and Total are partnering to develop a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project on the Norwegian continental shelf.
The project is part of Norway’s plans to develop full-scale CCS in the country.
Statoil was awarded a contract in June by Gassnova for the the first phase of the scheme, with Norske Shell and Total E&P Norge now joining as equal partners.
The first phase could have capacity for about 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year and will be designed to accommodate larger volumes, the partners said.
The project will store CO2 captured from industrial facilities in eastern Norway and then transport the gas by ship to a receiving terminal on the west coast of the country.
The CO2 will then be transferred to storage tanks before being piped to injection wells east of the Troll field on the Norwegian continental shelf.
The companies said three locations have been identified for the receiving terminal, with a final decision to be made later this year.
