WPD is set to install the offshore substation for the 111MW Nordergründe offshore wind farm in the North Sea.
The long-awaited platform was loaded out earlier this week and is en route to the construction site some 15km north-east of the Wangerooge island
WPD had to postpone the commissioning of the project after substation supplier BVT filed for insolvency about one year ago.
Several sub-contractors carried out the remaining works on the substation, with GE delivering the HV/MV equipment, Muehlhan doing the coating, and Stahlbau Nord finalising the steel works.
Crane Rambiz 3000 is expected to install the 2050-tonne substation on a monopile foundation later this week, weather permitting.
Full commissioning of the project, initially scheduled for late 2016, is now slated for the end of 2017.
MPI Offshore’s jack-up vessel MPI Enterprise completed the installation of 18 Senvion 6MW turbines in December 2016.
