Finnish energy developer Suomen Hyotytuuli has officially opened its 42MW Tahkoluoto wind farm in the Gulf of Bothnia.
The project is the first offshore wind farm built to handle icy conditions and features 7.5-centimetre thick steel foundations by Technip capable of breaking up winter sea ice.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, Suomen Hyotytuuli chairman Tuomo Kantola said the developer hoped to soon build more wind farms off Finland.
“Developing technological solutions for arctic conditions can bring export possibilities for Finnish projects and technology businesses,” he added.
Jan de Nul jack-up Vole au Vent finished installing the project’s 10 4.2MW Siemens Gamesa turbines earlier this year.
