Croatian shipyard Uljanik has started pounding the metal to construct a new cable-laying vessel for French company Nexans.
Nexans said the vessel is designed for worldwide installation of large volumes of HVDC and HVAC cables and will have a 10,000-tonne capacity turntable.
The ship, which has been designed by consulting agency Skipsteknisk, will have dynamic positioning – IMO class 3 – and dual laying and bundling capabilities.
The cable-laying equipment will allow the vessel to “perform complex installation operations of flexible products in shallow to deep water,” Nexans said.
The vessel is expected to be delivered and start operations by the third quarter of 2020, the company added.
Nexans senior executive vice president at the HV and underwater cable business group Dirk Steinbrink said: “Together with our legendary vessel CLV Nexans Skagerrak, the new ship will reinforce Nexans’ position as a leading player in the growing submarine HV cabling market.”
