A coalition of businesses, organisations and individuals has called on North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to harness the state’s offshore wind potential in its future energy plans.
In a letter to the governor, the group urged him to commit to “establishing a goal for offshore wind power” and to support policies to advance renewable energy.
It also asked Cooper to work with agencies including the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to “facilitate the siting of offshore wind”, and institutions such as universities to promote research into technology and development.
The coalition of 50 organisations includes state senators and representatives, conservation groups and local businesses.
“North Carolina has more offshore wind potential than any Atlantic state … converting just a fraction of the winds off our shores to energy could provide all of North Carolina’s energy needs,” the letter said.
It also made reference to Avangrid Renewables’ successful bid for the 1.5GW Kitty Hawk wind zone off the North Carolina coast in March, which it called “a step in the right direction”.
In July this year, Cooper signed into law a bill that included an 18-month moratorium on new permits for onshore wind.
