Deepwater Wind will bid a combined 144MW offshore wind and 40MW energy storage project into the Massachusetts clean energy call.
The US developer said the Revolution project will be put forward in reply to the segment of the state’s request for proposals that includes the promotion of energy diversity.
It will also put forward a separate bid under the wider section 83C of the RFP process in December 2018.
“People may be surprised by just how affordable and reliable this clean energy combo will be,” said Deepwater chief executive Jeffrey Grybowski. “Offshore wind is mainstream and it is coming to the US in a big way.”
He said the scalable project could be expanded if other New England states want to participate and Revolution will be competitive “at any size”. Tesla will supply the battery element.
The project will be located in the company’s 2GW federal lease site off Massachusetts and wil be adjacent to the 90MW South Fork being built to supply power to New York.
Deepwater has also committed to basing construction and operations in the city of New Bedford, Massachusettes for the wind farm.
If approved, work on Revolution will start in 2022 with operations following the next year.
