The Spanish government has awarded 5037MW of new renewables capacity in its latest auction.
The government said it was forced to apply a clause offering more than the original 3GW because of “high demand”.
More than 3.9GW was awarded to solar photovoltaic projects, while wind farms received 1128MW.
Big solar winners include Cobra Concesiones with more than 1.5GW, Enel Green Power with 339MW and Desarrollos Fotovoltaicos Meridionales with 316MW.
Saudi company Alfanar secured most of the wind capacity with 720MW, with Ibervento Infraestructuras next with just over 171MW and Greenalia Power with more than 133MW.
The projects are expected to be operational by 2020.
The government awarded 3GW of renewable capacity at an auction in May.
Together with the latest auction some 4.1GW of new wind capacity will be added in Spain by the end of the decade.
This will translate into investments in excess of €4.5bn and the creation of 25,000–30,000 jobs during construction, according to the Spanish Wind Energy Association.
WindEurope chief policy officer Pierre Tardieu said: “It is a positive signal for the wind industry, notably the Spanish supply chain.”
Spain said the 2017 auctions will help it meet its objective of 20% renewable power by 2020.
