Siemens Gamesa has won a deal from Dong Energy to supply turbines to the 752MW Borssele 1&2 wind complex off the Netherlands.
The turbine manufacturer will deliver 94 of its 8MW offshore wind turbines for the site that is to be operational by the end of 2020. It is the first supply deal for the 8MW machine.
The deal was first reported in subscriber-only reNEWS.
Siemens Gamesa said the nacelles for the project will be assembled at the company’s new factory at Cuxhaven in Germany, while the blades will be produced at Hull in the UK.
The contract also includes maintenance of the turbines, Siemens Gamesa said.
Dong country manager Jasper Vis hailed the “key milestone” of the project.
“This is an important step on our way to reducing the cost of renewable electricity in the Netherlands,” he said.
Dong senior vice president Anders Lindberg, who is also responsible for construction of Borssele, said the company is “progressing well” with the project.
“We are looking forward to working with Siemens Gamesa and the other suppliers who all contribute with innovations and cost outs to make the realisation of a large-scale offshore wind farm possible,” he said.
Siemens Gamesa offshore chief executive Michael Hannibal said: “The advanced model of our proven direct drive offshore wind turbine platform and our advanced services will leverage the energy output of this lighthouse project and help to move offshore wind into the energy mainstream in Europe.”
Borssele 1&2 is some 22km off the Dutch coast in water depths of between 14 and 38 metres. Dong holds a contract of €72.70 per megawatt-hour for the project.
