High winds have boosted power output and caused electricity prices in the day-ahead auction to plummet to new lows today, according to energy market specialists EnAppSys.
EnAppSys said prices will go down to £1.60 a megawatt-hour, which is a tenth of the usual cost overnight.
“This is a new record in the day-ahead auction,” said EnAppSys’s Phil Hewitt.
“The previous record was for Christmas day morning in 2015 at 4am which is a traditional low demand period as everyone waits for Father Christmas, but a mid-week overnight has higher demand so this is unprecedented. With almost 10GW of wind forecast to run, this is driving low prices.”
