ABB has delivered five new 66kV WindStar transformers to MHI Vestas Offshore Wind for deployment at EDF’s 41.5MW Blyth offshore wind demonstration project off the coast of Northumberland.
The Swiss company said the newly-developed transformer fits into the tower of a wind turbine boosting voltage levels to 66kV.
It added that the boost in voltage will reduce losses and make the wind generation systems more efficient, as well as bringing lifecycle benefits and cost-efficiency gains.
The Blyth project will feature five MHI Vestas 8.3MW turbines.
ABB said it will also supply a further 11 transformers to Vattenfall’s 92.4MW Aberdeen Bay offshore wind demonstration project.
Aberdeen Bay will comprise 11 MHI Vestas 8.4MW V164 turbines.
ABB transformers business managing director Markus Heimbach said: “The development facilitates the integration of offshore wind energy bringing, clean power to the people and reinforcing our position as a partner of choice for enabling a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”
