Dutch companies TWD and Royal Wagenborg are developing a new method for carrying out maintenance at offshore wind farms that does not require jack-up vessels.
The partners said the new floating solution offers “similar workability” with “significant” cost and time savings for the exchange of turbine components.
“The vessel independent tool is equipped with a motion compensation system to mitigate relative motions during turbine approach and allows for a safe connection,” the companies said.
“Once connected, a smart blade handling cart can collect, transport and place blades and other heavy components of the nacelle,” they added.
TWD and Royal Wagenborg said they have successfully carried out a technical feasibility study of the concept.
