The Maritime Research Institute of the Netherlands (Marin) has tested a floating mega island concept that could provide living and working space at sea for the renewable energy industry.
The island comprises 87 connected triangles that form a flexible floating island that could be up 5km in cross-section.
It could be used for developing, generating, storing and maintaining sustainable energy, such as offshore wind, tidal energy, wave energy and floating solar panels, Marin said.
Project manager and developer Olaf Waals said: “As sea level rises, cities become overcrowded and more activities are carried out at sea, raising the dikes and reclaiming land from the seas are perhaps no longer an effective solution.”
