Groningen province has a 10GW offshore wind resource in the northern Dutch North Sea according to a new report.
The study by Blix Consultancy commissioned by Groningen deputy for energy Nienke Homan found “huge” potential for offshore wind around 65km north of the Wadden islands.
Homan presented the report to Dutch minister of economic affairs Henk Kamp urging the central government to facilitate more development of offshore wind in the region.
The province wants the Dutch government to release licensable areas north of the operational Gemini stretching to the German border in the east and shipping lanes to the south.
As reported by subscription-only newsletter reNEWS in June, Groningen is pushing for the up to 10GW area to be included in the Dutch government’s proposed offshore wind roadmap for the years up to 2030.
