A group led by utility Kyuden Mirai has won a tender to develop an offshore wind farm in southern Japan for about 175bn yen ($1.5bn).
The Hibiki consortium will build and operate the Hibikinada wind farm near the Port of Kitakyushu City in Kyushu island, the municipal authority said.
The scheme is expected to have up to 44 turbines, it said without giving more details.
Group members include J-Power, Saibu Gas and engineering firm Kyudenko.
This is the first wind project to get the green light in Japan following a revision of its port law to aid the development of offshore wind, according to the companies.
The auction, launched in October, forms part of a plan to boost the offshore wind industry in the Hibikinada district of the city.
