MHI Vestas has taken down the damaged V164-9.5MW prototype turbine at the Osterild test site in Jutland, Denmark.
The turbine manufacturer said investigators recommended the machine be taken down as the “most effective way to determine the root cause” of the 4 August fire that almost completely destroyed the machine’s nacelle.
“The demolition of the prototype was done Tuesday evening, 15 August,” MHI Vestas said.
A root cause of the fire has yet to be determined, the company added.
The fire occurred when the turbine was being started up, it is understood. No one was injured.
“The company’s investigation into the root cause will continue in earnest now that the turbine is down. There is no timetable for the conclusion of the investigation,” MHI Vestas added.
