TSO TenneT has awarded Siemens a contract to build and install the 900MW DolWin6 grid hub in the German North Sea.
The grid hub is slated to go online in 2023 and will cost less than €1bn, TenneT said.
Siemens will deploy its direct current compact switchgear technology for DolWin6. This makes the substation some 10% smaller than previous 900MW platforms, TenneT added.
Spanish company Dragados Offshore will be responsible for construction and offshore installation of the platform, Siemens said.
Nexans will supply and install two parallel 90km DC cables that connect the HVDC substation with the German grid in Emden/Ost in a deal worth €100m.
Some 45km of the cable route will be situated offshore.
Earlier this year Dong Energy secured 110MW of grid capacity for its Gode Wind 3 project that will connect to the DolWin6 grid hub.
Other wind farms that will export power via DolWin6 will be determined in next year’s auction.
