Duke Energy has invited proposals for up to 500MW of wind capacity in North and South Carolina to feed into its transmission system.
The US developer said the drive could help it meet North Carolina standards requiring the company to generate 12.5% of retail sales via renewable energy sources or efficiency programs by 2021.
The invitation is open to both existing wind farms and new developments.
Duke already operates 35 solar facilities in the Carolinas, but currently doesn’t purchase any wind capacity for customers in the region.
It said wind energy could compliment its solar portfolio when the sun stops shining.
