Germany should introduce a €30 a tonne tax on carbon dioxide emissions, wind energy lobby groups BWE and VDMA Power Systems said today at the opening of the Husum Wind trade fair.
A carbon levy could replace Germany’s tax on electricity, BWE president Hermann Albers said.
He said such a move would be the first step towards a new system to replace current support mechanisms in the country.
“The current auction price levels based on Germany’s renewable energy act reflect business strategies, but not costs,” he argued.
Albers added that Berlin should also speed up onshore wind deployment by setting a target of 5GW a year instead of the existing 2.8GW goal in order for Germany to meet domestic and international climate objectives under the Paris agreement.
The country should also instigate more measures to increase renewable energy’s share in the heat and transport sectors, the BWE president said.
