DNV GL has opened a control hardware in loop test bench in Germany for renewable energy generation plants.
The facility connects physical power plant controllers to a real-time simulator that emulates a renewables plant, allowing the controller to be tested and validated without the need for an actual generation facility or power grid.
It allows testing according to the latest revisions of the German grid codes, with the possibility to use ISO 17025 accredited measurements, DNV GL said.
The company said it will make the test facility available to a variety of customers, including controller manufacturers, renewables developers and operators, as well as companies providing testing and measurement services.
DNV GL executive vice president central Europe and Mediterranean Andreas Schröter said: “Until now, testing controllers meant downtime for the generation farm and huge effort coordinating many different players.
“The test bench reduces the cost, risk and effort required to comprehensively test control systems for renewable energy generation farms.”
