Wärtsilä subsidiary Greensmith Energy and AEP are to partner on a 4MW energy storage system integrated with the Buck and Byllesby hydro power plants in southwest Virginia.
The system is scheduled to start operating in the first quarter of 2018 and will provide frequency regulation to the PJM regional transmission organisation.
It will use Greensmith’s GEMS software platform to serve both of PJM’s frequency regulation markets for at least 20 years.
Buck and Byllesby are operated by Appalachian Power, a subsidiary of AEP.
