The European Commission has awarded €4m in funding to a new interconnector project that will link Ireland with France.
The Celtic Interconnector will unlock greater integration of renewables on the European grid and is seen as vital to the development of an Irish offshore wind industry.
It will feature around 600km of cables that will transmit up to 700MW between the southern Irish coast and the north-west French coast.
“The interconnector will also enable surplus renewable energy – generated, for example, in very sunny or windy weather – to be transmitted to other locations where there is high electricity demand,” said the Commission.
EirGrid and RTE France are developing the project.
