ABB has won a $30m contract from TenneT to supply grid stabilisation technology to help increase the uptake of renewable energy in Germany.
The work will involve the delivery and installation of a hybrid static compensator (Statcom) at the Borken substation in Hessen in central Germany.
“(Statcom) will support the grid with flexible reactive power compensation and dynamic voltage support to reduce the risk of voltage collapse and power outages,” ABB said.
Statcom helps to stabilise voltage fluctuations caused by the intermittent nature of wind or solar power, the company said.
ABB power grids division president Claudio Facchin said: “We are delighted to work with TenneT once again and support Germany’s mission to supply clean wind power to millions of people.”
