Element Power’s proposed 500MW Greenlink interconnector between the UK and Ireland has moved a step closer after the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) gave support to the project.
The Irish energy regulator has instructed the country’s transmission system operator EirGrid to begin processing grid applications for projects, such as Greenlink, which have EU Project of Common Interest status.
Element Power chief executive Mike O’Neill said: “This is one of the critical pieces in the jigsaw of a project with wide-ranging political support, technical feasibility and excellent value-for-money for consumers.
“We look forward to the CRU now prioritising the regulatory arrangements for this much-needed interconnection from Ireland to the UK to ensure we can continue to move through the next stage of development and enable this project to begin creating jobs and inward investment.”
The 170km Greenlink interconnector would connect Ireland from Great Island off County Wexford to the UK at Pembroke Dock in Wales.
