Siemens has developed a new direct current transmission system for medium-voltage AC grids from 30kV to 150kV.
Siemens said the MVDC Plus system is for grid operators that need to enlarge infrastructure to handle increasing volumes of power from distributed and renewable energy sources, while keeping the network stable.
The company said distances of up to 200km can be bridged by the system, which is offered in three variants with transmission capacity of 50MW, 100MW, and 150MW at DC voltages of 20kV to 50kV.
“This makes MVDC Plus suitable for connecting small communities in sparsely populated regions to the grid, and for connecting and stabilising low-power distribution grids regardless of their voltage and frequency,” Siemens said.
The system also allows operators to set up a link between islands or offshore platforms and the mainland in order to avoid maintenance measures and costs for a diesel generator backup, it added.
