French utility Engie has awarded a £50m contract to Voith Hydro for refurbishment of its Ffestiniog power station, part of the 2GW First Hydro pumped storage operation in North Wales.
The German engineering company will carry out work on units 1 and 2, with an option for the refurbishment of units 3 and 4.
Design, planning and component production are due to start immediately, while on-site work is expected to get underway at the end of 2018. The refurbishment is scheduled for completion by early 2020.
Engie chief executive in the UK and Ireland Wilfrid Petrie said: “This is a major commitment to infrastructure development in Wales, and confirms Engie’s position as one of the UK’s leading producers of flexible, low carbon energy.”
