The government of Italy today announced its intention to phase out coal-fired electricity generation by 2025, and increase the deployment of renewable energy.
The phase out will be formally adopted in the country’s National Energy Strategy, which will be released on 10 November.
Think tank E3G said that coal plants with as little as 15 years of operational life will need to be retired.
E3G programme leader for fossil fuel transition Chris Littlecott said: “Italy now joins its G7 peers in Canada, France and the UK in taking action to phase out coal power generation over the next decade.”
