Public support for renewable energy in the UK remains strong with 82% backing the technology, according to a new government survey.
The latest ‘Energy and Climate Change Public Attitudes Tracker’ shows only 3% of the public opposed to clean power and 1% strongly opposed.
Support for renewables stood at 77% in the last tracker report.
The backing for renewables contrasts with support for other technologies, with 33% backing nuclear and 25% opposed. Support for shale gas stood at 13%, according to the survey.
The survey showed 74% support for onshore wind, up from 73% when in the previous report.
Public support for wave and tidal energy and offshore wind both had support of 79% those surveyed.
RenewableUK executive director Emma Pinchbeck said: “An overwhelming 82% of people support developing all types of renewable energy – so when it comes to reaching out to voters, renewable energy is an issue that matters.”
Renewable Energy Association head of policy and external affairs James Court said: “Following an extraordinary year for the industry, seeing record highs for generation and dramatic falls in prices, it is not surprising that public support for renewables has risen and is the most popular form of generation.
“We now need the government to see what the public have seen and take the brake off this sector.”
