Several industry associations and politicians from some of Germany’s northern states and cities have called on the country’s federal government to expand offshore wind development.
The so-called Cuxhaven Appeal 2.0 is an 11-point paper asking the government to improve the framework conditions for the expansion of offshore wind in Germany to as much as 30GW by 2035.
The appeal was made by politicians from Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Hamburg and Bremen together with associations, including the Offshore Wind Industry Alliance, Offshore Windenergie and WAB, and union IG Metallküste.
The signatories said the latest call builds on a joint appeal for offshore wind support made in 2013, which they said helped ensure “good progress” for the sector in Germany.
Further expansion of offshore wind would secure jobs, bolster economic development and help Germany meet climate targets, they said.
However, in order for further expansion of offshore wind new measures are required, such as grid capacity expansion, network optimisation and a boost for research and development, the signatories added.
