Enel Green Power has signed an agreement with the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems of the National Research Council (IMM NRC) to set up a research and development facility to explore new renewable energy technologies.
The laboratory, which will be established at the Enel Innovation Lab at Passo Martino near Catania, will mainly focus on the development of solar cells and photovoltaic (PV) systems.
In particular, the partners will look to develop technologies for next-generation double-sided PV modules that can generate power not only from direct sunlight but also solar radiation reflected from the ground.
Enel and IMM NRC will also look to develop hydrogen fuel for the electrolysis of water induced by solar radiation, mimicking a process similar to photosynthesis with artificial structures.
Enel Green Power head of innovation and sustainability Riccardo Amoroso said: “We work in a challenging and rapidly evolving energy environment, so we have to forge synergies that enable us to be on the cutting edge and bring more reliable and sustainable solutions to the market.”
