All-Energy 2026: Shanks bullish on UK clean power

The UK government is committed to doubling down on its clean power agenda as a response to unfolding global market crises, the All-Energy 2026 conference heard today (13 May).

Energy minister Michael Shanks told delegates in Glasgow that the conflict in the Middle East “should be a wake-up call that we can’t afford to delay” the energy transition.

“For the second time in less than five years we are seeing the devastating consequences of an energy system that relies too much on an oil and gas market that we can never control,” Shanks said.

“(Russia’s invasion of) Ukraine was a moment we should have said we will do everything possible as a country to change direction, but we didn’t, so this present crisis must be that line in the sand.”

The full story, as well as strategic updates from the chief executives of NESO and Great British Energy on their companies’ work in supporting renewable energy deployment, is in today’s reNEWS Live@ show daily from the All-Energy 2026 conference.

The special edition also has an op-ed from Shepherd & Wedderburn partner Jamie McRorie on how the UK’s energy policy landscape is taking shape, as well as a Q&A with Reblade chief executive Fiona Lindsay discussing end of life options for onshore wind farms and the key aspects of turbine decommissioning.
