The University of the Algarve’s Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) has deployed an Oceanflow Energy tidal turbine prototype off the Portuguese coast.
CIMA’s Marine Offshore Renewable Energy team installed the 1:10-scale Evopod E1 device in the Ria Formosa estuary in southern Portugal.
The three-month trials will examine the 1kW unit in a shallow-water estuarine environment, looking at both the impacts of the turbine on its environment and the effects of the flow conditions on the turbine.
The E1 unit was previously tested by Oceanflow Energy at Northern Ireland’s Strangford Narrows from 2008 to 2011.
