Hiiu municipality in Estonia has approved a cooperation agreement between Nelja Energia and Hiiumaa Offshore Tuulepark to develop an up to 1.1GW offshore wind farm off the coast of the Baltic country.
Local media reports that a letter of intent between the developers, which was signed three years ago, becomes binding following the municipality backing.
The plan is to build a wind farm comprising between 100 to 160 4–7MW turbines with total capacity of 700MW to 1.1GW north of the island of Hiiumaa, the reports said.
No turbines will be located closer than 12km to the island and the wind farm will be connected to the grid via Hiiumaa, which will also host the operations and maintenance base, the reports added.
