The European Parliament’s environment committee has called for the EU to increase its 2021–2030 renewable energy goal to 45%, together with setting binding targets for individual member states.
Climate Action Network Europe renewables policy coordinator Jean-François Fauconnier called the vote a “step in the right direction”.
However, the NGO said the target does not “recognise the full potential of renewable energy in Europe”.
It called on the parliament’s industry committee – which is responsible for the overall position on the issue for the parliament – to raise the ambition.
The industry committee is expected to adopt its position on 28 November.
