European green industry trade bodies including Wind Europe have written an open letter to MEPs calling for binding target of at least 35% renewable energy by 2030.
Ahead of tomorrow’s discussion of the Blanco-Lopez report in the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, the letter said going below a 35% target would mean Europe installs less renewable capacity in the next decade than in the current one.
The Clean Energy for All Europeans package proposed by the European Commission last November suggests a European binding target of at least 27% renewable energy by 2030.
“This target’s lack of ambition translates to a slow-down in renewable energy deployment after 2020,” the letter states.
“We therefore urge you to support a binding target of at least 35% as being the bare minimum to keep momentum going in this fast-growing industry and ensure Europe reaps the economic benefits resulting from a sustained renewable energy deployment.”
Other signatories to the letter included Ocean Energy Europe, Solar Power Europe and the European Biomass Association.
