Green Power Sweden has commissioned a review which finds that infrasound from wind turbines does not have a negative impact on nearby residents.
The audit, carried out by Akustikkonsulten and Akustikverkstan, confirms that current knowledge shows infrasound levels reaching residents are not considered harmful, the organisation said.
The review also concludes that recent research claims suggesting harm are not supported by the broader body of evidence, Green Power Sweden added.
The study was commissioned following claims from a research group based in Uppsala and Gävleborg that infrasound from wind power could be harmful to nearby residents.
It notes that both the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and Uppsala University’s vindkraftskurs.se have repeatedly stated that such claims lack support in wider research.
The review finds that existing assessments remain valid and that infrasound levels at wind farms should not be assumed to have negative effects.
It also states that the newer research does not add evidence on health impacts and relies on selective references to existing studies.
The findings indicate there is no need for specific guideline values for infrasound from wind turbines because harmful effects are not expected at observed levels.
The review further concludes that special regulation of infrasound from wind power is not justified, reflecting current permitting practice and case law.
