The Welsh Government has launched the Cymru Clean Power Renewable Energy Sector Deal to accelerate renewable energy projects and strengthen energy security, affordability and economic growth in Wales.
RenewableUK Cymru welcomed the deal as a major step forward for Wales’ energy future, describing it as a long-term commitment between government and industry to expand onshore and offshore wind, solar and tidal, while building local supply chains.
The organisation said the agreement aims to maximise community benefits and address key barriers such as grid capacity, consenting and planning, as well as workforce development needs.
RenewableUK Cymru stated it led work to bring the sector together, highlighting a £10 billion opportunity for Welsh businesses and the potential to create 8,000 secure, well-paid jobs if renewables are scaled up.
Jessica Hooper, director of RenewableUK Cymru (pictured), said: “By scaling up home-grown renewables, Wales is showing leadership by reducing our exposure to global shocks beyond our control – and commitment to building an energy system based on affordable, secure power produced here at home.
“Wales has world-class natural resources – our wind, coastline and weather are strategic national assets.”
She added: “Turning that advantage into jobs and long-term prosperity will depend on working together to remove barriers and anchor investment here in Wales.
“Cymru Clean Power will focus on the key constraints holding the sector back, including grid capacity, consenting and planning, and strengthening community energy and engagement.”
